Michael Van Kerckhove is a native of Detroit. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre & English from Western Michigan University in 1997. He lived in Chicago from 1998-2006 where he was a Network Playwright with Chicago Dramatists. He began his solo performance/storytelling work with NewTown Writers in their various performance series. Michael has been published in NewTown Writers’ print and online anthologies. From 2001-2007, he was the “Chicago Scene” columnist for On The Purple Circuit, a Los Angeles-based glbt theatre site.
From 2006-2009, he lived in South Bend, Indiana with his partner, Theatre Professional, Ernie Nolan, who took a Professor of Theatre position at Indiana University South Bend. Michael directed the Fall 2006 IUSB Theatre production of With Their Eyes, and served as adjunct Theatre faculty, teaching Introduction to Theatre. He has a year of graduate work in IUSB’s Master of Arts in English program under his belt.
They returned to Chicago in April 2009. Michael has served as Artistic Director and VP of NewTown Writers, co-producing three installments of Solo Homo and a play reading event. He has been active in the current Chicago Storytelling scene revival having been invited to present work with Essay Fiesta, Mortified, Story Club, Story Lab Chicago, That’s All She Wrote, This Much Is True, and other events.
In 2012 he was part of the inaugural writing team for The Snackpot, a food and culture site based in Chicago.
Michael is a 2013 graduate of DePaul University’s Master of Arts in Writing & Publishing where he served as Creative Nonfiction Editor of the 2013 edition of Threshold, DePaul’s journal of literature and art. He works as Executive Director of Theatre for Young Audiences/USA.
